The Witch-king of Angmar , also called the Sorcerer King in some translations, is a fictional character in J. R. R. Tolkien's fictional universe of Arda. He is the leader of the Nazgûl, the servants of the Dark Lord Sauron. His name is not revealed in any of Tolkien's writings.

The Witch King, like the other eight Nazgûl, no longer possesses a visible body, having worn and used with avarice and malice for a long time one of Sauron's "Great Rings", and for this reason, in order to make himself visible to his servants and spies, he is forced to wear a large black mantle that manages to give shape to his invisible ghost body.

In the world of perpetual twilight, however, as Frodo Baggins sees it, once he has slipped the ring at the foot of Windhill, he appears as a tall man (the tallest of the "Nine"), dressed in a single long gray suit, and with a white face in which piercing and ruthless eyes blaze. On his head, over his long, glittering gray hair, he wears a silver helmet on which is placed a crown, and his gaunt hand wields a long steel sword.

In the past, during the Battle of Fornost, he also wore a black mask with which he led his sortie. This mask is no longer mentioned in any other work by J. R. R. Tolkien and is replaced by a royal crown of steel sparkling with a deadly light that during the siege of Gondor, first, in front of Minas Morgul he shows off placed over his black hood to instil terror and respect in his army, and then, in front of Gandalf, once shattered and passed through the gate of Minas Tirith, placed directly on his invisible head, which reveals only two fiery red eyes.

In his first appearance, he rides a specially bred black horse enslaved by the dark arts of Minas Morgul, so that he can endure the constant presence of his master who would otherwise make him flee in terror, as would happen to any other living beast in Middle-earth. During the siege of Gondor, Shadow, the fearless lord of the free horses of Middle-earth, is the only beast who proves to bear the presence of the Ringwraiths with the utmost firmness and courage.

When his steed was swept away and drowned at the ford of the Bruinen, at the hands of the combined magic of Elrond and Gandalf, the Witch King returned to Minas Morgul, where he found a new mount: a gigantic and hideous winged creature. This monstrous being was one of the last descendants of an ancient and evil race that survived among hidden mountains, coming from ages and places now disappeared and forgotten by all but Sauron. The latter, in fact, had taken possession of them and fed them with cruel food, increasing their wickedness and size out of all proportion. These beings were larger than any other bird, from which they differed above all in that they did not possess any kind of plumage, that they had immense bat-like wings with skin stretched between horn clutches, and that they gave off an unbearable deadly stench.

In The Two Towers and The Return of the King, during the siege of Gondor, the Witch King, seated on the long, hunched neck of their winged mounts, fulfills the will of the Lidless Eye, terrifying anyone nearby with the screams of death accompanied by the croaking cries of their steeds. They terrify the inhabitants and even the most daring and courageous defenders, stationed on the seven walls of Minas Tirith, since the "Nazgûl are the Lords of Men" over whom they have full dominion, as Sauron has fully theirs.

As for weapons, the Lord of the Nazgûl has a long sword of steel, the blade of which is pierced by flames at his will. This sword, in The Lord of the Rings: The Conquest, a video game based and developed on Peter Jackson's film trilogy, is called Sword of Terror, although this name does not appear in any of Tolkien's writings. When necessary, however, he sets aside his sword to use more devastating weapons, such as the deadly and necromantic Morgul Dagger, with its fiery pale light, capable of inflicting a terrible mortal wound on the enemy (as for Frodo in the shadow of Collevento) as painful as that of an arrowof poisoned ice. During the Battle of the Pelennor Fields, the Black Captain wields a huge black mace with which, with a single and very quick blow, he shatters Éowyn's shield causing her to fall to her knees with her left arm broken.

The Witch King is loyal to his Lord and appears in the various wars unleashed by Sauron as his captain, commanding the other eight Nazgûl and the armies of Mordor. He underestimates his opponents in combat, as he is aware of Glorfindel's premonition that no man is capable of killing him. During the events before the War of the Ring, the Witch King feared Overseer Boromir I (after whom Boromir II was named, a member of the Fellowship of the Ring).
