  • Rules & How To Play Reversi
    • Dark player moves first.
    • Each piece played must be laid adjacent to an opponent’s piece.
    • The row of opponent’s pieces must be flanked by the new piece and another piece of the player’s color.
    • If a piece is played so that pieces or rows of pieces in more than one direction are trapped between the new piece played and other pieces of the same color, then all the pieces in all directions are turned over.
    • The game is over when no player has a viable move.
    • The winning player is the player with the most pieces showing their color.

  • Othello Strategy: How To Win Reversi
    • Try to take a corner.
      • The corners are known as stable discs as they cannot be flipped.
      • It means your opponent has fewer options.
      • Be careful with laying pieces one removed from the corner (vertically, horizontally or diagonally) as it can enable your competitor to take the corner.
    • Look for positions where your opponent can’t make as many moves.
      • Again, the fewer options they have the more control shifts to you.
      • If you place pieces where they can’t make a move (because they do not have any pieces on the opposing side) then their turn is skipped. In some cases if you set it up correctly you can do this 3 or 4 turns in a row and shift a large portion of the board.
    • Flank your opponent’s pieces.
      • If you can get a piece at each end of a row or column, either straight or diagonally, then every piece in the row between your two pieces is captured.
    • New players look for any move that turns the most pieces. This is known as a maximum disks strategy. However, Reversi is won towards the end.
      • Look to place yourself strategically on the board early on, typically at corners so as to limit your opponent’s options.
      • The fewer pieces you have on the board, the better. Your mobility will be increased while limiting your competitor’s mobility.
      • Pieces that have empty squares beside them form the “frontier”. The rest are called interior discs. Try not to have many frontier pieces.
