    What happened to Freddie Thorne?

Freddie Thorne (played by Iddo Goldberg) was a Communist, living in Birmingham and a former close friend of Thomas Shelby (Cillian Murphy).

He was married to Tommy’s sister, Ada Shelby (Sophie Rundle) and they had one son together, Karl Thorne, named after Karl Marx.

Freddie featured throughout the first season of Peaky Blinders, last appearing in season one, episode six.

He was a Sergeant in the Great War and was part of the 179th Tunnelling Company.

Freddie was Tommy’s best friend and even saved his life during the war.

However, the pair had a falling out after Freddie became a communist following the end of the year in 1918.

Back in Birmingham in 1919, Freddie began secretly seeing Tommy’s sister, Ada, meeting recently under a bridge to avoid being caught by the Shelby family.

Following the war, Freddie was seen in Birmingham rallying the Communist faction to strike at the Birmingham Small Arms Company (BSA).

His potential link to the stolen BSA guns leads Inspector Campbell (Sam Neill) to investigate Communists in the Small Heath area in Birmingham.

As a result, Freddie is about to leave Birmingham to avoid arrest but a moment before he was about to board the train, Ada revealed she was pregnant.

Aunt Polly (Helen McCrory) agree the young couple money to leave Birmingham but Freddie chose to stay, insisting he was not scared of Tommy.

However, due to Inspector Campbell’s crackdown one communist in the area, Freddie had to go into hiding.

When Ada gave birth to their son Karl, Freddie came out of hiding to meet his newborn son, but the police arrived immediately to arrest him, clearly knowing of his whereabouts.

Unsurprisingly, it was suspected Tommy had sold Freddie’s whereabouts to the police but he denied doing such a thing.

Instead, Tommy ranged a prison break out when Freddie was being transferred to Brixton prison, which was successful.

Freddie and Danny (Samuel Edward-Cook) were late to the confrontation between the Peaky Blinders and Billy Kimber’s (Charlie Creed-Miles) men.

At the very beginning of Peaky Blinder season two, it is revealed Freddie had died.

The Peaky Blinders and Ada are seen at his funeral and it is suggested he died of ‘pestilence’ - most likely the Spanish Influenza pandemic of 1918-1920, which occurred before the second series begins in 1922.

At the funeral, Tommy reveals he made a promise back in France during the war he would speak over Freddie’s grave should he pass away before him, a promise which he fulfils.
